Too Large for an Insane Asylum
Lin Wood's attempted takeover of the SC GOP
After South Carolina seceded from the Union in 1860, James L. Petigru famously said, “South Carolina is too small for a republic and too large for an insane asylum.”
Last month, Lin Wood helped further confirm Petigru’s proclamation when he announced he had moved to South Carolina and is running for chairman of the state’s Republican Party. This almost immediately resulted in former president Donald Trump reiterating his endorsement of incumbent chairman Drew McKissick. After all, McKissick helped clear the way for the SC GOP to skip a primary in 2020.
Mr. Wood is currently being investigated for voter fraud by the Georgia Secretary of State’s office. He allegedly voted in Georgia while living in South Carolina. Wood claims that he didn’t change his residency to the Palmetto State until February. However, if he was living in South Carolina and just hadn’t changed his residency that could present further problems for him in both states.
Mr. Wood also refused to undergo a mental evaluation that the State Bar of Georgia requested he submit to. He will possibly lose his law license as a result of that refusal. He is suing over that, of course.
Many of you may remember all of Mr. Wood’s conspiracy-mongering after the election. He also was banned from Twitter for his violent rhetoric. His remarks on the day of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was just “rhetorical hyperbole” he later said. Among those remarks was a call for then-Vice President Mike Pence to be executed by firing squad.
Now let’s move on to current events in the SC GOP.
A report from The Daily Beast details the current ground zero of the fight - the Greenville County GOP. The county convention will be held this Tuesday night (4/13).
Presley Stutts of the Greenville County Tea Party is reported to be the leader of the opposition fighting against “RINOs” and the local party “establishment” which all overwhelmingly supported and worked for Trump.

Stutts also posted numerous photos of the Jan. 6 rally and subsequent riot, including selfies with Infowars host Alex Jones and rally organizer Ali Alexander. One early post from the day, with a photo of the mob clamoring up the inauguration stand on the Capitol’s West Front, had the cheer-leading message “Trump supporters breach the Capitol!”
This goes along with him posting QAnon-related memes on social media along with his attacks on local party leaders. Mr. Stutts also admits to encouraging Lin Wood to run for state chairman.
One long-time SC GOP activist told me that Stutts and Wood are “tied at the hip.”
He went on to say:
With Stutts and Wood, they seem to forget that politics is a game of addition—not subtraction. Whether Lin Wood likes it or not, Wood cost the GOP the U.S. Senate. My only hope is that he doesn’t do for South Carolina what he did for Georgia.
It has also been reported that pardoned criminal Michael Flynn is headed to South Carolina to campaign for Lin Wood. However that was later walked back. While Flynn has endorsed Wood, the event is a local candidate event.
